Kampala Fang Fang

Dr Chinkholal Thangsing

The first day of the AIDS Healtcare Foundation Africa Bureau Meeting went swiftly and we were adjourned for the day before you even know it started. The air and enthusiasm of the participants was palpable. I went up to my room and after a quick refreshing wash I was soon bounching down the stairs where I met Henry. “Any plans…for the evening” he piped with a smile and delight written on his face when I responded in the negative. “No plans yet? did you have any?” I asked. He suggested some hotel but recommended that we dine at the Kampala most famous Chinese restaurant. The conceirege organised a taxi for us and soon were were taking the lift to the 2nd floor - where FANG FANG welcome us.

The chinese hostesses wear bright red chinese traditional dresses walk over with beautiful smile across their faces greeted us “Ni Hao” and we responded in unision “Ni Hao, Ma” and spoke to me in mandarin fast and unaware that other than those two, no three words I am deaf to the chinese words she uttered to welcome us inside the restaurant. Finally, let the cat out by speaking to them in english and confessing that I am not Chinese to their utter surprise and they were all the more suprised and childishly amused when Henry told them that I was from India.

We ordered the hottest and most spicy food available and they were deeply concerned that we will burn our tongues and speak in unintelligelble (have to check the spelling) language as the chilly stimulate the sensory taste buds. Well, that did not happen to their frustration. The local Bell, was bitter and later on maybe its the chillies that made the beer totally tasteless at the taste buds were anaesthesized by the hot chillies in the pork curry.

We left Fang Fang - and the kindly young guard down the building search and locate a taxi that took us back to the Africana. Wherever you go - it seems the Chinese food follows you but it was there before you waiting for you as in many other places and problably including the planet Pluto.
